About 100 stores in Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, Enugu State, have been sealed by the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control due to allegations of selling phony alcoholic beverages. The agency also detained four dealers and seized a truckload of contaminated goods.
NAFDAC’s Director for the South-East Zone, Mr. Martins Iluyomade, stated on Monday that the suspects were already in custody and would face charges following an ongoing investigation. He made this statement following the raid and arrest. He stated that the raid served to enhance NAFDAC’s mission of protecting the public’s health and ridding the Southeast of wholesome, inferior, counterfeit, and contaminated goods.

“We stormed the popular Ogbete Main Market, Enugu in Enugu State since Friday and have shut down 100 shops which have been identified for selling fake alcoholic beverages.
Arrest were made and the suspects are currently in custody.
“This fake wine and alcoholic beverages are being sold to unsuspected customers and the general public but we are determined to rid the market of these unwholesome products, ” he stated.
According to the head of NAFDAC Zonal, the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services, and the Police actively collaborated on the rigorous operation, deploying people for the well-planned raid.
