The former Rivers State governor and ex-minister of transport,  Rotimi Amaechi has revealed that the Nigerian politicians are in office for the sole purpose of stealing, killing, maiming and retaining power by all means to remain in office.

Amaechi, speaking during a National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria which aimed at discussing pathways to good governance and political integrity in the country, described the Nigerian politician as being power-toxic and corrupt-minded with the tendency to kill, steal and ensure power retention through any possible means.

Admonishing the masses, Amaechi remarked that the politicians get away with the alleged corrupt practices because the people seem to have short memories and forget too soon.

Making reference to the current administration, Rotimi Amaechi said the political ecosystem will never change as President Bola Tinubu is not and will never be willing to give out power, adding that Nigerians are too quick to forget history.

He said, “All we hear here is typical Nigeria, and you’re clapping. That’s why politicians get away with anything. They get away with murder because you have a short memory. None of you here can defend the votes. You have complained; Nigerians have been clapping for you.”

“The politician is there in Nigeria to steal, to maim, to kill, and to remain in power. If you think Tinubu will give it to you, you are wasting your time. When we speak, we forget history.”

“Before the election of the last president, a lot of us were called to intervene. Why did they do that? The people were ready to die. You’re talking and abusing everybody; nobody has power and will give to you. Not even me. If you want a pastor as president, go and get one.

The former governor also talking about his political journey said, he has been in politics since 1987 when he graduated from the university. He also disclosed that poverty has been the ultimate drive and motivation to remain in politics.

“Unfortunately for me, poverty has made me part of the political system since I left university in 1987, and I’ve been part of the process till today,” he stated.
