The operatives of the Nigerian police in Anambra have announced a search for suspects who have killed and injured two police officers at a checkpoint at Omata Junction, Nnewi-Oba Road, in the Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.

The state police public relations officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack on Friday in the state and explained that the hoodlums had attacked the checkpoint at about 9 am on Friday, throwing bombs at the officers who were deployed to the check-in point for a routine exercise.

The PPRO said the police did not ascertain the reason for the attack.

According to the statement, the PPRO explained that the police commissioner in the state Nnaghe Itam had ordered an extensive investigation and brought the hoodlums to justice.

He explained that the manhunt team, led by the Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Nnewi Area Command, has commenced work collaborating with locals in the community to identify the hoodlums and arrest them for prosecution immediately.

“The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered manhunt operations on gunmen who attacked the police team around 9.20 am on August 9, 2024, at a checkpoint at Omata junction, Nnewi Oba Road.

“The operation, led by the Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Nnewi Area Command, is already working with the locals to unmask and apprehend the attackers.

The statement further mentions that a team of police officers have been detailed to the area to ensure the maintenance of law and order. Providing further details about the attack, the PPRO maintained that the officers who were stationed at the checkpoint exchanged gunfire with the gunmen. During the exchange, the hoodlums threw explosives at the officers, which resulted in heavy degrees of injuries for the individuals.
