Police clears air on arrest of Labour Party National Vice Chairman in Abia

The Abia State Police Command has addressed the issues that led to the arrest of the Labour Party’s National Vice Chairman for the South-East, Ceekay Igara, on Saturday. The police disclosed that the chairman was invited by the after a petition was submitted to the police from the party’s acting state chairman accusing him of impersonation.

The clarification was contained in a statement sent to journalists by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, on Sunday.

The statement noted that the command invited the arrested vice chair along with three others for alleged conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, impersonation, and obtaining by false pretence.

The statement noted that the Abia State Police Command received a written petition from the Labour Party’s Acting State Chairman against Mr Ceekay Igara and three others for alleged impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The statement noted that he was invited by the detectives who are attached to the command and was subsequently released after questioning and statement taken as the detectives have continued their investigations into the case.

The statement established that yesterday, 19/10/2024, detectives from the Command invited the petitioned vice chairman to the Command Headquarters, took his statement, and released him the same day.

In an earlier statement from the party, the Labour Party demanded the releases of the National Vice Chairman for the South-East, Mr Ceekay Igara, who that said was arrested by police after an allegation of misconduct on the order of the state governor Alex Otti.

The demand for the releases was made in a statement issued by the Deputy National Chairman, Dr Ayo Olorunfemi, on Saturday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He noted that the national vice chairman was arrested by the police while holding a meeting with some party leaders when they were surrounded by policemen and whisked away without any warrant of arrest.

The statement noted that the party was shocked by the arrest of the party leader.

The statement noted that they were demanding the immediate release of Comrade Ceekay Igara from police custody. He noted that the leader should be taken to court within the next 24 hours, as required by law, if his arrest warrants such.
