The police in Enugu state have confirmed that it began a search for the individuals who have been suspected to be killers of the Ogbete Main Market Traders Association, Stephen Aniagu.
The development was confirmed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement on Sunday. He noted that the police, in its initial investigation, found out that the individuals who killed the trader’s chairman took him to the Amechi Road area of the state, where he was shot and his car taken away on Saturday.
He also noted that when the report about the shooting was sent to the police, a rescue team was sent to the scene; the PPRO noted that the victim was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the medical personnel on duty; his body was later deposited in the mortuary.
The statement disclosed that the police operatives in the state are currently in a search with a view to arresting the individuals who murdered the Chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association, Enugu, Stephen Aniagu, at Topland, along Amechi Road, Enugu, around 8:20 p.m. of September 14, 2024.
The police noted that the victim was acted by some gunmen who drove in a Toyota Corolla car. He was reportedly double-crossed and shot while his blue-coloured Toyota Corolla car was taken away by the suspects.
He continued that a tactical team had been deployed to trail and arrest the suspects behind the killing of Aniagu while assuring the public that justice would be served.
The statement further confirmed that the police commissioner had given the assurance that the police in the state will do all it could to ensure that the individuals who have committed the crime were arrested as soon as possible.
On another note, the state governor, Frank Mba, while reacting to the incident, expressed displeasure with the killing of the businessman; he directed that the killer of the man should be arrested in 48 hours.
In a letter released by the governor on Sunday, Mba stated that the crime will noted go unpunished as such crime will not be allowed to go on in his the state. The governor further sent his condolences to the family of the deceased and OMMATA.
The governor noted that as he has directed the security agencies to arrest the perpetrators, all criminals in the state should they will be arrested as no act will go unpunished. He noted that those who committed this atrocity have bitten off more than they can chew
The governor stated that all hands would stay awake and work until the suspects were arrested by the police. He explained that the suspect had slept in the state, so neither they, the government, nor the security agencies would rest until they were arrested and charged with the requisite law.
