The police in Benue State have confirmed the electrocution of a middle-aged man who had attempted to vandalise the transformer installations of the Jos Electricity Distribution Company in the State capital.
The Police Public relations officer in the State, Cathrine Annene, confirmed the incident on Tuesday. She explained that the command received a report of the incident and disclosed that it took place in the Wadata area of the state.
The middle-aged man, whose identity was still unknown, was electrocuted opposite the Queens Hotel, located at Ankpa Ward in Makurdi, the Benue State capital after he attempted to vandalise the transformer installations belonging to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company.
Some of the residents of the area who woke up on Tuesday noted that they had come out on Tuesday morning to see the dead body of a man inside the transformer installation hanging in between the poles which connect the transformer.
A resident named Terkula, who spoke to the press, noted that he had thought he would take advantage of the power outage in the area to commit the crime of vandalisation but was unsuccessful as power was restored in between.
Explaining their discovery of the man, he noted that they had woken up in the morning at about 5 am to discover that power had been restored in the community, with some areas having lights while others were in a black-out. When the residents approached where the transformer was situated, it was discovered that a man was left hanging and dead inside the transformer.
It was disclosed that the resident informed the police at the ‘D’ Division Police Station, who arrived at the scene and evacuated the body.
The Head of Corporate Communications at JED, Dr Adakole Elijah, confirmed the incident and noted that vandals’ activities in different locations have continued despite the tight security modalities put in place in different locations of the installations.
H called on the community members to be steadfast in protecting JED installations in their area, as the facilities serve them before any other individual. He encouraged them to use the facilities as the company can not be in the area of installations at all times.
