The West African Examination Council has released the statistics for the just-released 2024 batch of results. The results were released on Monday and announced by the Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Dr Amos Dangut, at a press briefing.
In his statement, Dangut noted that 73.79 per cent of total candidates obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics.
It was announced that the examination body withheld the results of 215,267 candidates, which represents 11.92 per cent of the total candidates who sat for the exams. He also noted that 1,805,216 candidates took part in the exams across the 36 states of the country.
While announcing the results on Monday, Dangut noted that 1,301,941 candidates, representing 72.12 per cent, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
He explained that out of the candidates who took the exams in the thirty-six states of the country, 93.39 per cent of the candidates, which is 1,685,889, have had their full results processed and released to them, while 6.61 per cent of the candidates, representing 119,327 candidates, had some subjects from their results withheld. This, he said, ranges from one or more subjects that are withheld. He further explained that the withheld results have a few issues that are being sorted.
According to his statistics he explained that the total numbers of the withheld stands at 215,267 candidates which represents 6.61 per cent of the 1,805,216 have had their results withhel because of some reportd cases of examination malpractices before during and after the exams.
The withholding of the results are connected to vairous examinattion misconduts he emphasisied.
He explined the number of the withheld results for the 2023 examination have seen an improvement from the previous year where 16.29 per cent of the results were with held while in 2024 a total of 6.61 per cent the figures are4.37 per cent than the previous year.
The Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC frown at the contionious use of cell phones in the examination halls despite the councils rejection of the practice which is against the examination regulation, he also noted that some instances of schools organizing cheating has been are concerns too.
He informed that public that such caases that were submited to the council are being investigated and the reports will be submited to diffent commites of the council for deciosns and apprippote sanctions.
He noted that when the investiagtions are concluded and decisons are made the outcome of the investigations will be communicated to the affected candiates through their vairious schools, candidates who are dissatidied with the decisoins can use the WAEC website to call for a redress if they dim it fit he noted.
On the demographics of the candiates that sat for the exam he noted that out of the 1,805,216 that participatd for the exams in Nigeria, 896,894 were males representing 49.68 per cent while 908,322 were female which represents 50.32 per cent.
The exams were cnducetd in four countries that are member to WAEC he listed the countirs as Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
During the press breiefing on monday Dangut frowend at the attitudee of some states that are still indebtted to the exam body he inforemd such states that the results of such sates wont be relesed until the payments and made and all oustanding issues sorted out.
He beeged the states concerd to be proactive in settling all the oustanding to enable candidates access their results as son as possible.
The examination with the results releasd lasted for seven weeks and six days, from April 30 to June 24, across the 36 states in the country.
