An AI-powered robot has successfully performed the world’s first-ever fully automated dental surgery on a human.
The robot dentist, designed by a startup company in Boston, US, reportedly carried out the operation on a Boston man.
Its founding company, Perceptive, backed by Meta boss, Mark Zuckerberg’s father, Edward Zuckerberg who is also a dentist, says the robot dentist is designed to utilise a three-dimensional (3D) imaging software in addition to artificial intelligence and a robotic arm for dental work.
The new technology is designed to capture 3D images to understand oral health and can complete procedures like fillings and crown replacement in 15 minutes unlike conventional methods that sometimes require over 2 hours to be spent by patients on a visit to a dentist.
In a statement, the Chief Executive and founder of Perceptive, Dr Chris Ciriello said: “This medical breakthrough enhances precision and efficiency of dental procedures.”
While the start-up which has received $30 million (N48 billion) in funding insists that its technology is safe and can “transform dentistry,” it disclosed that its latest invention is not currently on sale in the US because it has not received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) who are the statutory regulators in America.
