Google, in its usual tradition, unveiled a doodle on Friday, 5th, 2024, to celebrate the powerlifting Paralympics 2024.
This comes amidst the commencement of the Paris Paralympics 2024 at Aréna Porte de La Chapelle in Paris, where athletes compete across various weight categories.
With the new doodle, Google aims to recognise the athletic prowess and dedication of the athletes by highlighting wheelchair tennis and depicting a large blue bird holding a baguette like a weightlifter’s barbell with a brown bird on top pecking on a piece of bread.
The creative doodle states, “The wait is over, the weights are on. Get ready for today’s Para Powerlifting event at Aréna Porte de La Chappelle!”
Powerlifting first appeared in the Paralympics at the Tokyo 1964 Games and was listed as an official Paralympic sport in 1984.
The sporting activity requires competitors to lower the bar to their chest, keep it stationary, and press it back up to full arm extension with locked elbows.
Both men and women can compete in powerlifting, although their weight categories differ.
According to its ethos, men compete in weight categories of 49 kg, 54 kg, 59 kg, 65 kg, 72 kg, 80 kg, 88 kg, 97 kg, 107 kg, and over 107 kg. In contrast, women compete in weight categories that are usually a little less than men’s but are often considered their equivalence. These include weight categories of 41 kg, 45 kg, 50 kg, 55 kg, 61 kg, 67 kg, 73 kg, 79 kg, 86 kg, and over 86 kg.
Google’s new customised doodle highlights the value of the sporting event and the spirit and strength of the athletes participating in the Paralympic Games.
