AIG Usaini Gumel, the commissioner of the Kano State Police, has given explanations for the police’s disregard to Governor Abba Yusuf’s order to dismiss Aminu Ado Bayero, the deposed emir of Kano.
Recall that on Thursday night, governor Yusuf gave the CP the directive to evict the ousted 15th Emir of Kano from his residence in the Nasarawa small palace. This directive came through the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi.
In a phone conversation with The Punch on Friday, the police commissioner mentioned that obeying the governor’s order of eviction would be equivalent to “jumping the gun.”
He said that the State High Court would hear a lawsuit on the eviction order on Monday, June 24, 2024, and that the same government that issued the order had filed the case there.
“The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the same government has filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday, 24th June 2024.
“The government is jumping the gun because the same government has filed a case on the eviction order, which is coming up on the 24th of June, 2024. So, if we carry out the order, it is like we are pre-empting the court because we don’t know what will happen at the court,” he added.
The removed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero is currently living at the Nasarawa small palace, where security measures has been stepped up.
A Punch correspondent who visited the small palace at around 11:30 a.m. mentioned that additional security guards have been sent to the location in addition to those already present.
It was observed that security guards had blocked all four main routes to the small palace because the police had not yet evicted the deposed Emir as instructed by Governor.
The deposed Emir and his retinue of palace guards and supporters remained in the small palace, regardless the CP having not yet complied with the governor’s directive.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of Bayero’s allies told The Punch that the traditional rulers who have remained loyal to him were still giving him “traditional greetings” while he is still in the palace.
“Let me tell you, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero is still in the mini palace and as I am talking to you now, he is receiving the “traditional greetings” from those loyal to him,” the source revealed.
He debunked the rumors making waves around in some circles that the palace has a bulldozer positioned there ready to evict the Emir.
“I heard that there is a rumour going around in some quarters that a bulldozer has been stationed at the Nasarawa mini palace ahead of the demolition. This is a social media propaganda,” the source added.
