The Edo State Government has announced the launch of an investigation into the building collapse that happened in the state in the early hours of Saturday. The building was housing some student of the University of Benin in Ekosodin. The government noted that the investing was aimed at uncovering the cause of the collapse of the building in the state.
The plans were disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, on Saturday in a statement released in the state. He stated that the government officials had been asked to move to the scene of the incident with the aim of monitoring the situation and giving feedback to the government.
He noted that the building was a three-story structure located at Khator Street, off Ekosodin Road, near the University of Benin, Ugbowo. He noted the government, after deploying government officials to the scene of the incident, rescued some of the students who were trapped and went to the hospital where they were receiving treatments.
The Special Adviser further disclosed that the government had deployed the staff of the Edo State Fire Service and personnel from the Edo State Command and Control Centre, to the scene and have confirmed that no live was lost from the incident as normacy has returned to the place.
Osagie also disclosed that with the personnel deployed to the place the government had asked for the deployments of excavators to the place to clear the debris and disassemble parts of the compromised structure.
The reemphasized that the government had ordered a comprehensive study into the cause of the collapse. Also the government asked for the audit of the nearby buildings with the view of conditing integrity test on the structure in order to avoid a reoccurrence of the incident.
The Edo government praised the efforts of first responders and residents who aided in handling the situation. He further appreciated the courtliness of the emergency teams and the friendliness of local servicepeople who played a paramount role in the emergency response.
Some of the students who spoke earlier confirmed that the rescue team from the university did its best to rescue most of the persons trapped under the debris. The source noted that most of the persons rescued were severely injured, while a lady who was trapped under the rubble was searched for.
