A two-storey building reportedly under construction collapsed in Awka, Anambra State capital on Wednesday evening, leaving many trapped in the rubble.

An eyewitness, Charles Umeh, reported that the building which is located along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in the state capital was still under construction and those trapped were mainly the workers at the site.

“I saw about five men working on the roof of the building earlier before the collapse. But I cannot tell how many of them were trapped there,” Mr Umeh said.

Another witness who pleaded anonymity narrated that those trapped included the engineer handling the building project. According to the witness, the engineer was later rescued.

“Even the engineer in charge of the building was trapped alongside others. His name is Stanley. But he was later rescued,” he said

The police spokesperson in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development on Thursday morning in an interview with journalists.

The operatives led by the divisional police officer of the Central Police Station in Awka visited the site of the incident according to Mr Ikenga, a police superintendent.

He added that they have rescued two victims and taken them to hospital for medical attention. He also disclosed that there was no loss of life at the time of the interview. Also, he said the engineer handling the project, alongside the owner of the building, has been invited to the police station for questioning.

“We have rescued two workers, and they have been taken to a hospital. For now, no life was lost as the victims are responding to treatment,” he said.
